Visa-Free Entry to Okinawa
Most international visitors can enter Japan, including Okinawa, without a visa for tourism purposes. This straightforward process makes traveling to Okinawa accessible for most travelers.
Who Can Enter Visa-Free
Citizens from over 60 countries enjoy visa exemption programs for stays up to 90 days for tourism, business meetings, conferences, and visiting friends or family.
Includes:
- United States, Canada
- United Kingdom, Ireland
- Most European Union countries
- Australia, New Zealand
- Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan
- Many other nations
Some nationalities receive shorter visa-free periods. For example: Thailand, UAE (15-30 days), Indonesia (15 days). Always verify your specific country’s agreement with Japan before booking.
Passport Requirements
Your passport serves as your primary identification and must meet specific requirements for entry to Japan.
Validity Requirements
Your passport must remain valid for the entire duration of your stay. While Japan requires validity only for your stay period, having at least six months validity is recommended to avoid complications.
This buffer prevents issues if you need to extend your stay unexpectedly or face delays during check-in at your departure airport.
Blank Pages
Ensure your passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps. Japanese immigration typically uses one full page for their entry stamp with landing permission sticker.
Having at least two blank pages prevents delays during the immigration process.
If your passport is damaged, has missing pages, or shows significant wear, consider renewing it before travel. Immigration officials may deny entry with a damaged passport, even if technically still valid.
When You Need a Visa
Certain circumstances require obtaining a Japanese visa before traveling, even if you’re from a visa-exempt country.
Visa Required For
- Work Purposes: Any employment or contracted work in Okinawa beyond simple business meetings
- Study: Enrolling in language schools or universities. Educational institutions assist with applications
- Extended Stays: Stays longer than your visa-free period allows
- Non-Tourism Activities: Activities beyond tourism scope defined by visa-exemption agreements
Working Holiday Visas
Available for citizens aged 18-30 from specific countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, France, Germany, and several others. Allows 6-12 month stays with work privileges.
Visa Application Process
Apply through the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country. Processing typically takes 5-10 business days. Apply at least one month before departure, especially during peak seasons.
Entry Procedures at Naha Airport
Understanding the entry process ensures smooth arrival, whether Naha is your port of entry or you’re connecting from mainland Japan.
Immigration Process
Step 1: Present passport to immigration officer
Step 2: Biometric data collection (digital fingerprints of both index fingers and facial photograph) for most foreign nationals aged 16+
Step 3: Receive landing permission stamp indicating authorized stay period
Step 4: Proceed to baggage claim and customs
Children under 16, diplomats, and special permanent residents are exempt from fingerprint and photograph requirements. The process is quick and efficient for those who do undergo it.

Food & Medication Restrictions
Japan has strict regulations on food imports and certain medications to protect agriculture and public health.
Food Import Rules
Generally Prohibited: Fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and plant products without plant or animal quarantine certificates. These require special permits rarely available to tourists.
Usually Allowed: Processed and packaged foods in reasonable quantities for personal consumption (up to 10kg or approximately 3 weeks supply).
Medication Guidelines
Prescription Medications: Allowed in reasonable quantities for personal use, typically up to one month’s supply. Bring a doctor’s letter explaining your medical needs and original prescription labels.
Controlled Substances: Certain medications legal in other countries are controlled or prohibited in Japan. This includes some common cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine. Research Japanese regulations on your medications before traveling.
Extending Your Stay
If you wish to extend beyond your initial authorized period, apply at Okinawa Regional Immigration Services Bureau in Naha before your current permission expires.
Extensions are not guaranteed and granted at immigration authorities’ discretion based on valid reasons. Tourist visa extensions are generally difficult to obtain unless you have exceptional circumstances.
Valid Reasons May Include: Unexpected illness or injury preventing travel, missing scheduled departure due to circumstances beyond your control, or compelling humanitarian reasons.
Overstaying your permitted period, even by one day, results in serious consequences including detention and deportation, future entry bans (one year to permanent), and potential criminal charges for intentional overstay. Always respect your authorized stay period.
Domestic Travel to Okinawa from Mainland Japan
Once you’ve entered Japan, travel between Okinawa and mainland cities like Tokyo or Osaka is considered domestic travel.
Important Points
No Immigration: You won’t go through immigration again when flying domestically between Japanese cities.
Identification Required: Always carry your passport for domestic flights. Airlines verify passenger identity, and hotels require foreign visitors to present passports during check-in as required by Japanese law.
Security Checkpoints: Standard airport security applies to domestic flights, but the process is typically faster than international security screening.
